What is a Hydraulic Cylinder?
A hydraulic Cylinder (also known as a Hydraulic jack or hydraulic ram) is a device used to lift heavy loads by applying a high force created by the pressure in the cylinder chamber. Hydraulic systems are based on Pascal’s law of fluid pressure. Fluid pressure multiplies power in a cylinder to lift a heavy load.
The hydraulic pump forces hydraulic oil into the cylinder chamber. As a result, the pressure in the cylinder increases, push out the piston, and the piston jack up and retracts by oil pressure. These two actions generate pushing, pulling, and lifting activities.

Different Types of Hydraulic Jacks & Their features
There are two types of cylinders based on the return method:
- Single-acting cylinder
The single-acting cylinder has two ways to return oil: gravity or load returns. Gravity return refers to the piston return in the state of pressure relief through its gravity. Loaded return refers to applying force to the piston to make it return. - Double-acting cylinder
The double-acting cylinder uses liquid energy to lift and retract. It has two oil connections. Both jacking and returning are driven by hydraulic oil pressure. The retracting operation is faster than single acting’s, and the control of the retracting displacement is also more accurate. If your project needs to repeat the precise jacking working, a double-acting cylinder is a good choice.
Different cylinders have different purposes and features that make them more suitable for specific applications.
Based on the function, there are the following categories:
- General-purpose hydraulic cylinders have a wide range of applications, from 10tons to 1000tons used in all positions
- Low height cylinders can be used under limited space
- Telescopic cylinders have a long stroke which could lift higher
- Aluminium cylinders featured in lightweight, a more convenient choice for carrying
- Safety Lock nut cylinders with Locknut are used for load holding. It could secure loads mechanically
- Hollow cylinders have a central hollow, which could use for tension applications
- A cylinder equipped with a tilt saddle could divert unbalanced loading on the plunger and prevents damage to the piston
